‘Dancing with the UWF Stars’ coming to Seville Quarter’s Phineas Phogg’s

The University of West Florida dance club is holding its third annual “Dancing with the UWF Stars,” on April 24 at Phineas Phoggs at Seville Quarter.
“Dancing with the UWF Stars” is an event to raise money for the dance club.
“We have professional ballroom dancers who partner up with UWF faculty or staff members who then perform a routine the night of the event, and the audience will determine the winner by vote,” Tiffany Pickett, office specialist of the Anthropology Department, said in an e-mail interview.
UWF’s version of “Dancing with the Stars” is different from the TV show because there are no actual judges.
“The TV show has judges first doing eliminations and making comments and recommendations, and then audience votes,” Pickett said. “Ours just has audience vote and no judge comments or eliminations.”
At least five dances will be featured at this year’s event, all of which are ballroom or partner dances.
“The two-step, mambo, East Coast swing, lindy hop, and the tango are the main styles that will be performed,” Pickett said.
A silent auction will be held during the event.
“A few of the silent auction items to bid on will be a 3-night, one- or two-bedroom accommodation in Destin’s Resorts of Pelican Beach, private ballroom dance lessons with instructor Orion Hall, artwork by local artist Riece Walton, one piece of artwork from a non-local artist, a gift basket arrangement of several items, possibly more,” Pickett said. “We’re waiting on replies from a few more places.”
Five teams will be participating in the event.
“There will be five faculty or staff members participating,” Pickett said. “Each faculty or staff member is paired up with a professional dance instructor.”
“Dancing with the UWF Stars” is based on volunteer participation and audience support. The dance club will continue to host the event as long as there is an audience to attend, Pickett said.
The UWF stars include Jeff Hagedorn and Eileen Perrigo from the Communication Arts Department, Associate Dean of Students Michael Jasek, assistant professor of theater Kevin Kern, and Assistant Director of the University Honors Program Jennifer Phillips.
Professional dance instructors Orion Hall, Todd Longsworth and Jamie Hensor will partner the UWF stars. Contact Tiffany Pickett to purchased tickets at 857-6277, or e-mail her at tpickett@uwf.edu.
