GoPensacola.com's Back-to-School Party Guide!

BACK-TO-SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS

GOPENSACOLA.COM STAFFAUGUST 19, 2010

With classes beginning Monday at two of Pensacola’s largest institutions of higher learning — the University of West Florida and Pensacola State College — the GoPensacola crew would like to take a moment to welcome all new students and to say welcome back to all the returning students. Starting — or returning to — classes can be a stressful thing, and while your studies should come first, everybody needs to take time to blow off steam. Pensacola’s party scene offers you plenty of opportunities, with many clubs having regular “college nights” and/or offering special “back-to-school” parties this week.

We’ve got your party guide, and a word of caution: While college allows for a lot of new freedoms, it doesn’t allow for underage drinking. If you’re younger than 21, please don’t try to purchase alcohol from any of these establishments. You’re only making yourself look bad — and running the risk of getting thrown out. Don’t be that guy.

And if you are of age to imbibe, please do so responsibly. Know your limits and have a designated driver; barring that, call a cab.

• Seville Quarter, 130 E. Government St. in downtown Pensacola, will have its annual Back to School Toga Party on Thursday. Kick off the school year dressed in anything from a simple toga to something more elaborate, such as a Roman slave, or a figure of Greek mythology. Anyone in costume or toga will get free admission, and if old enough to drink, will also get their first beer free. Among the entertainment, expect live music from Timberhawk, dance music with DJ D-Mixx, the Dueling Piano show and karaoke with Krazy George.

• Without a doubt, the week’s biggest college night is Thursday nights at Seville Quarter. Known affectionately to the locals as “kids & squids night” — though the owners stress that there’s plenty for everyone, not just the under-21 set — admission is open to ages 18 and older, with a $5 cover charge if you’re old enough to drink, and $10 if you’re not. Seville Quarter is a massive entertainment complex with 7 rooms of entertainment, but the biggest Thursday-night crowds will be in Phineas Phogg’s, which featyres a huge DJ dance party, and Rosie O’Grady’s, home of the raucous singalong Dueling Pianos show. A variety of DJs and live bands play throughout the rest of the complex, and don’t forget about karaoke with Krazy George in Lili Marlene’s. Standing drink specials include $3 pitchers until 11 p.m. and $5 pitchers after 11 p.m. And Seville is continuing its summer College Night Cookouts, private parties open to college students only from 7 to 10 p.m. at the End O’ the Alley. Cover for the cookout is free with college ID, and the party features DJ music, cookout food with all items at $5 or less, $3 Yuengling pitchers, $2 Three Olives vodka specials, $2 Jello shots and beer pong.
